About SplitOrDutch
Free tools and plain-English guides for splitting shared costs fairly, without arguments or spreadsheets.
Why we built it
Splitting a restaurant check, a flat's rent or a weekend trip should not end in a calculator fight. Most shared costs are small, but handled badly they cause awkward silences and quiet resentment. SplitOrDutch exists to take the maths out of those moments, and to explain, in everyday language, what a fair split looks like.
What you can do here
Restaurant bill splitter
Split a check evenly, or go Dutch dish by dish, with tax and tip shared in proportion to what each person ordered. Works in US dollars, pounds, rupees and euros.
Rent split calculator
Share rent between roommates by room size, private bathroom, master bedroom and utilities, so the better room costs a little more.
Country guides
How tax, tips and service charges appear on bills in the USA, the UK and India, with worked examples.
Practical guides
Step-by-step articles on rent, utilities, groceries, trips, gifts, tipping and subscriptions. See the guides page.
Our principles
- Free, with no sign-up. You do not need an account to use any tool on the site.
- Private by design. The calculators run in your browser. The amounts and names you type are not sent to our servers or stored. Our privacy policy explains what we do collect, such as standard server logs.
- Fair, not just equal. An equal split is often unfair, so the tools and guides cover proportional and weighted splits as well.
How we write our guides
Every guide is written from scratch for this site and focuses on one everyday situation. We show the arithmetic with worked examples, check the numbers before publishing, and add a "last reviewed" date so you can see how current a page is. We keep to practical, general information. Our articles are not legal, tax or financial advice, and rules such as service charges, tipping customs and tenancy law vary by country and by contract.
We do not name or rank other companies in our guides. They are meant to help you decide with the people involved, not to sell you anything.
How the site is funded
SplitOrDutch is free to use. To cover hosting and the time it takes to maintain it, we may show advertising, such as Google AdSense, on some pages. Ads never change how the calculators work, and details about cookies and ad personalisation are in the privacy policy.
