Split Calculation Example
Why Split Unequally (Going Dutch)?
When dining out with groups, dividing a check straight down the middle often causes friction if some guests only had a salad while others ordered cocktails and steaks. Going Dutch allows everyone to pay exclusively for their dishes while distributing shared tips and taxes proportionately.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I split a bill unevenly if someone ordered more?
Switch to the Go Dutch tab at the top of the calculator. You can add each friend's name, list individual dishes, and enter exact item prices. SplitOrDutch calculates each person's exact share and automatically divides shared tip and tax proportionally based on what each person spent.
Can I enter a fixed tip or tax amount instead of a percentage?
Yes. Click "Add tip or tax" to expand the extras panel. Both Tip and Tax have segmented toggles to switch between % Percentage and Fixed monetary amounts taken directly from your restaurant receipt.
Should tips and sales tax be split evenly or proportionally?
When diners spend widely different amounts, splitting tax and tip proportionally is fairest. SplitOrDutch calculates each person's ratio of the food subtotal so that guests who order less pay less tax and tip, while higher spenders pay their fair share.
Can I share the bill split breakdown directly on WhatsApp?
Yes. After calculating your bill, click the WhatsApp Group button to instantly open a pre-formatted message with each person's individual owed amount, tip, and total.
Does SplitOrDutch store my bill or personal information?
No. All computations run 100% client-side in your web browser. No names, receipt amounts, or payment records are transmitted to or stored on any server.
